![]() ![]() They also can occur when the injury is so serious that it cracks the bone. Causes of A Buckle Fractureīuckle fractures can happen from a fall, an impact, or a collision. Putting pressure on the broken bone can make the injured site and the symptoms worse. If it occurs in the leg, it will be impossible and very painful to put weight on it. When the buckle fracture occurs in the forearm, it will be difficult for the child to turn his or her elbow or wrist. If your child has sustained an injury and the injured site is tender to touch, he or she may have a fracture. However, the fact that there is no deformity does not mean that there is no fracture. Any form of sudden deformity in the arm or leg is most likely a sign of a buckle fracture. ![]() If it’s a serious fracture, the arm or the leg will bend abnormally. Protecting the injured limb can make the pain subside. Symptoms of Buckle FracturesĪ buckle fracture is associated with a lot of acute pain. This form of injury heals very well if the child wears the splint for approximately three weeks. ![]() This is usually found in children since their bones are still soft and very flexible.īuckle fracturesheal well in a splint (which can be easily applied) instead of using a heavy plaster cast. This form of fracture is ‘incomplete’, which means that the bone does not break completely instead, the bone bends and has a small crack in it. Report if the cast is rubbing and if the cast has any weak areas.A buckle fracture (also referred to as torus fracture) is the most common fracture in the arms and feet of young children.Check daily for any cracks, breaks or weak areas in the cast.Do not poke or push anything down your cast as you could break the skin and cause an infection or cause the lining to bunch up & restrict drainage whilst wet.Wash the surrounding area of your cast carefully, checking for soreness or redness. You may also swim with your cast unless you have had surgery. The cast may be wet under the shower unless advised NOT to do so.Do NOT squirt liquid soap or shower gel down inside cast as it will irritate skin.Your cast has a hydrophobic lining (i.e., sheds water), so your skin will dry when wet.Difficulty moving the injured limb, or keeping still to avoid movement.Pain, tenderness or swelling in the injured limb. Most Galeazzi fractures will require an orthopaedic consultation. It requires surgery in adults, but children can often be treated with a closed reduction and splinting only. The Galeazzi fracture is a fracture of the distal third of the radius with dislocation of the distal radio-ulnar joint. Treatment may involve closed reduction and casting. It generally results from a fall from height on an extended wrist and elbow. This fracture involves the diaphysis (midsection) of the radius and ulna. They are most common among children aged 5-10 years. Some require only a collar and cuff sling whereas angulated or displaced types are typically treated with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. These are the most common elbow fractures. Angulated or displaced fractures may need a closed reduction under anaesthetic and casting. Often the bones are not too bent and a simple waterproof cast is all that is needed. It usually involves the end of the bone near the wrist and can involve the growth plate (physis). This is the most common fracture among children under age 16, normally resulting from a simple fall on an outstretched hand and extended wrist. Benefits of post-operative physiotherapy. ![]()
